Lindsay, a liberal Republican, was elected mayor of New York City in 1966 and continued to serve in 1972 when he publicly supported John and Yoko. He died in 2000.

Their talent put John and Yoko "among the greatest of our time," Lindsay wrote, and "a grave injustice is being perpetuated" by the deportation proceedings.
